Here's a conversation we have with families over and over again, especially early in the recruiting process: someone hears advice from another parent or another athlete, and suddenly every family thinks they need a volleyball-only Instagram account.

In 10 years on the recruiting side and 10 years coaching college volleyball, here's a conversation that has never once happened: a coach saying they passed on an athlete because she didn't have a separate volleyball page. It's never happened, and that tells you everything you need to know.

The real issue isn't whether you have an account, it's whether or not your account is genuinely benefitting you in any way.

🎥 THIS WEEK ON YOUTUBE

Why You Don't Need a Volleyball-Only Instagram Account

Coaches click your film first, before they ever read your email. If they like what they see, THEN they go looking for who you are as a person, and a page full of nothing but highlight clips doesn't tell them that. This week we break down exactly what coaches are looking for on social media.

📱 SOCIAL MEDIA QUICK HITS

  • Coaches check social media AFTER they like your film, not before.

  • Your personal account almost always has more followers than a volleyball-only page.

  • You need to ask yourself, “How is having this benefitting me?” and “Is this creating MORE stress and anxiety about this process?”

  • Think about what is going to be best for you in your situation. Do what works best!

💬 FROM JASON

I struck a nerve this week by posting about this topic on Instagram. If you want to have a volleyball only Instagram account, by all means, get one. But I do want to encourage families and athletes that feel like they NEED to have one…you don’t. Do what is best for you and your family. Stick to what you decide as a family but don’t get sucked into doing something you are not comfortable with just because “everyone is doing it” becuase that’s not true either. @parallelrecruitinginitiative.
