"How many scholarships are actually available?" It's one of the most common questions we get from families starting this process, and the honest answer is smaller than most people assume and it just got smaller again.

Start with this: roughly 20-30% of every Division I and Division II roster in the country is not on scholarship. Not every athlete you see playing D1 or D2 volleyball is on scholarship.

For Division I, schools can carry up to 18 scholarships, but most programs run closer to 12 (some high-academic D1 schools, including the Ivy League, carry none at all). Using 12 as a fair average across roughly 330 D1 programs gets you to about 4,000-4,500 scholarships total. Under the old four-year model that was roughly 1,000 scholarships per graduating class. With the new fifth-year eligibility model spreading that same pool across five classes instead of four, it's closer to 800 per class now.

Division II caps out at 8 scholarships per school, though most programs run closer to 6-7, often stacked on top of academic aid. Across roughly 300 D2 programs, that's about 2,400 scholarships nationally — which was around 600 per class before the fifth-year model, and is now dropping below 500 per class.

Add it up and you're looking at roughly 1,500-1,750 scholarships nationwide per class across D1 and D2 combined and a lot of those aren't going to one athlete each. Partial scholarships get split across multiple athletes all the time, so the number of athletes receiving some athletic aid is higher than the scholarship count alone suggests.
